Tanby the 2011 Bendigo Cup winner

October 26th, 2011

Tanby kept his 2011 Melbourne Cup hopes alive by winning the 2011 $200,000 Listed Bendigo Cup (2400m).

The Lloyd Williams owned galloper in a workmanlike performance, held too many guns for stablemate At First Sight who produced the run of the race.

Tanby is 38th  in the Melbourne Cup order of entry and its connections will now hope Racing Victoria chief handicapper Greg Carpenter gives it a significant penalty to get him into the 2011 Melbourne Cup field.

A penalty of 2kg for wining the 2011 Bendigo Cup should get Tanby in Melbourne Cup while 1-1/2kgs will get him close.

Experienced jockey Steven King positioned the son of Galileo midfield on the fence before forcing a clear passage on the home turn.

Tanby sprinted clear before At First Sight charged home late under 58kg going down by a length and three quarters with Western Symbol a further length and away third.

“They went fairly quick early but he gave me a beautiful ride,” King said.

“When I asked him to switch on, he switched on and hit the line well.”

Nick Williams, son of Lloyd, conceded Tanby’s 2011 Bendigo Cup win may not be enough to get him into the 2011 Melbourne Cup field but he put on the hard sell.

“All I can say to Greg Carpenter is that he is clearly the most impressive Bendigo Cup winner I have ever seen,” he said.

“I hope he is listening to that and gives him 3kg.

“I am sure he will cut me back so hopefully he will give us 2kg.”

The Bendigo Cup has been good to team Williams with Gallic having won it in 2004 and 2006.

The disappointing run in the Bendigo Cup of 2011 came from the Luca Cumani trained Sahara Sun who loomed up at the turn but faded to eighth.

Though qualified for the 2011 Melbourne Cup being 24th in the order of entry, the owners who also have Mangihar, Drunken Sailor and Bauer aiming for the Melbourne Cup and may decide not to pay up the final acceptance fee come Saturday.
