2013 Bendigo Cup – Final Field And Barrier Draw

October 28th, 2013

The final field for the Listed 2013 Bendigo Cup (2400m) that will be run on Wednesday has been confirmed; with thirteen stayers attempting to follow in the footsteps of last year’s winner Puissance De Lune.

Veteran stayer Mourayan will carry the top-weight of 61.5kg and needs to produce a strong performance to convince connections that he is worthy of a start in the 2013 Melbourne Cup.

Mourayan (barrier one) finished his 2013 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival campaign with a victory in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) and has raced fairly without being overly impressive since returning to the races in September; finishing seventh in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) and eighth in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m).

Lloyd Williams could have two runners in the 2013 Bendigo Cup with Mourayan set to be joined in the final field by stablemate Massiyn (barrier 12).

Massiyn finished second in the 2012 Group 1 Irish St Leger (2816m) at Curragh but has failed to perform since making his Australian racing debut; beating home just a single runner in the SAJ Catercare Group Handicap (1500m) and the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m).

Darren Weir won the 2012 edition of the Bendigo Cup with Puissance De Lune, who was ruled out of the 2013 Melbourne Cup this morning, and will be represented in this year’s race by nine-year-old Gotta Take Care (barrier six).

Gotta Take Care has been up and running since the start of the year and continues to perform strongly; picking up wins in the Adapt Australia Handicap (2500m) and 1Print.Com.Au Handicap (2500m) before finishing in the placings in both the Listed The Bart Cummings (2520m) and the Group 2 Drake International Cup (2500m).

Mornington Cup winner Tuscan Fire (barrier 13) was far from disgraced when finishing 12th behind Fawkner in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) and will be return to easier company, while French import Kesampour (barrier 10) and Mick Price-trained Bit Of Hell (barrier four) have all performed fairly at Group level during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival.

The 2013 Bendigo Cup final field is rounded out by Folding Gear (barrier nine), Sertorius (barrier five), Verdant (barrier two), Hippopus (barrier three), Angola (barrier seven), Umatic (barrier 11) and Packing Empire (barrier eight).
