2015 Bendigo Cup Confirmed for Kirramosa

October 26th, 2015

Kirramosa was disappointing when tenth in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) last time out, and trainer John Sargent has revealed the mare will now contest Wednesday’s 2015 Bendigo Cup (2400m) rather than head towards the Melbourne Cup.

A Group 1 winner having taken out the 2013 edition of the Crown Oaks (2500m), Kirramosa returned this time for a credible fifth in a Rosehill Gardens minor over 1200m on August 15th; progressing to fifth in each of the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) prior to her Epsom Handicap flop.

Sargent also included Kirramosa in nominations for Saturday’s Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington, but the trainer appears as though he is set on the ‘lighter’ option for the mare this time.

Having been hampered in running before her lacklustre finish last start, Sargent told AAP the Alamosa mare has completely overcome soreness and should be suited to the conditions of the 2015 Bendigo Cup.

“She got knocked around on the turn with Winx, she was a bit sore behind for a few days but she’s back on track now,” Sargent said.

“That knocked her back for the Cup so she’ll go to the Bendigo Cup and then likely the Matriarch Stakes or the Queen Elizabeth Stakes on the final day (of the Melbourne Cup carnival).”

Beginning her racing career in her native New Zealand in the early stages of 2013, highlighted by a credible fourth in the Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m), Kirramosa immediately stamped her claims as one to watch upon debuting to Australian racing during the 2013 spring.

Running fourth in the Listed Reginald Allen Quality, Kirramosa placed second in a Randwick minor before taking out the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) leading into her Crown Oaks triumph.

Allocated the ideal barrier 2, Kirramosa has been confirmed to partnered by in-form hoop Chris Parnham and will carry a very manageable 54.5kgs in the 2015 Bendigo Cup.
